CDO Carl Prather with brother Vernon Prather.
April 2024 - Brothers Carl and Vernon Prather showcase positive images of active aging as they ski in Crested Butte, Colorado. Against all odds and with the help of adaptive equipment, Carl, a wheelchair user, demonstrates the power of positive thinking and an attitude of gratitude as he hits the slopes.
These brothers are changing older adult stereotypes. Both retired and over the age of 65 years they are discovering new found adventures of living well. As men of color with humble beginnings from the small historic neighborhood of Prathertown which was founded in 1883 by enslaved people, they are also breaking barriers as they travel the world to experience adventures of a lifetime. Although Vernon, through his service in the Navy has traveled abroad most of his career, partnering with his brother and getting an intimate look at the experience of wheelchair travel was eye opening and life changing.
They are now on a quest to help others break barriers. Through demonstration of people first language, they are helping organizations identify and address inefficiencies for people with disabilities. Through their mentoring to high school students they are coaching, providing life skills and encouraging partnerships to strengthen communities.
When not traveling these brothers lead programs at Prathertown Community Development Corporation a nonprofit organization in a historic neighborhood of Prathertown in Gaithersburg, Maryland which was founded in 1883 by enslaved people. Their leadership involves delivering technology support, offering financial literacy, advocating for the needs of community members while enjoying coffee from around the world. To join these brothers in helping this underserved community, your tax deductible contributions and volunteer opportunities can be done at: www.prathertown.org or contact: info@prathertown.org 301-258-1003 or follow us on social media.
