The Prather Family Cemetery is an important part of history.
The Prather family, originally from England, established a large plantation called Plain Dealing, which encompassed the current site of the Prather Family Cemetery, located in Rockville, Maryland. The plantation was extensive, and the Prathers owned many enslaved individuals who maintained the land. Following the Civil War, many of these former slaves adopted the Prather surname and founded Prathertown in 1883, a neighborhood in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where many of their descendants still live today. Although a historic marker commemorates Prathertown, the cemetery in Rockville, Maryland, where the Prather ancestors are buried, is in disarray.
Today, the Prathertown Community Development Corporation faces a pressing challenge: the preservation of the Prather Family Cemetery. Despite the presence of a historic marker in Prathertown commemorating its historic significance, the cemetery has fallen into disrepair. Overgrown with invasive species and in need of cleaning and maintenance, this sacred site requires urgent attention to ensure that the memories of those laid to rest here are respectfully preserved.
The Prathertown Community Development Corporation invites you to join in their efforts to restore the Prather Family Cemetery. Your support will help clean and maintain this historic burial ground, ensuring that future generations can learn about and honor the legacy of the Prather family and the resilient community of Prathertown.
Together, we can take meaningful steps to preserve our shared history and ensure that the stories of Prathertown continue to inspire and unite us. Visit our website to learn more about how you can contribute to this important cause.
Let's come together to restore the Prather Family Cemetery—a place where history rests, waiting to be remembered and cherished once more.
