Rev. James E. Prather was born in 1911 in historic Prathertown, a Gaithersburg, Maryland, neighborhood founded in 1883 by emancipated persons. He was a respected community leader and long time Pastor of historic Poplar Grove Baptist Church in Darnestown, Maryland. As a passionate community builder and civil rights advocate, Rev. Prather served on myriad local Boards including the Montgomery County Medical Care Foundation, the Board of Trustees of Suburban Hospital, Masonic Lodge of Rockville, and the Advisory Committee on Integration in the Public Schools. He wrote poetry to public servants to promote messages of peace, unity and equity.
